Th ey have nothing on the loans offered for RV’s.
My wife and I went to the RV and camper show yesterday, basically to get out of the house on a cold, winters day. We played the “what would we want if money was no object” game. We decided that either a small Class C RV, like the one above, or a large van that was converted in a compact camper like this:
The Ram is a really nice setup, with small kitchen, sleeping area and shower area. It would be ideal for travel
ing the country when we are older,
retired and richer (yeah, right). Anyway, most of these RV sellers had financing available, and several had terms up to 240 months! 20 years of payments for something that will depreciate 50% or more in, what, five years? Absolutely insane.

I believe this is because RVs are basically considered a home so the financing is in line with a home mortgage. At least that’s what I was told.

Yeah, RVs depreciate like crazy, and for good reason. All but the very very highest end ones are built like piles of hot garbage.

You might want to talk to this guy before buying the Ram....

My parents are close to retirement and considering one as a way to make trips to visti family mini vacations.
They breifly started looking. I can’t justify buying a new one given these cost and depreciate at the same rate as a s- class.
best option is to just rent imho

Boats work much the same way, with seriously long 15+ year loan terms available , and yes, boats depreciate in a similar fashion to RVs and luxury cars.
There’s a few factors a play beyond the insanity that a fraction of buyers would be able to afford these toys without massively long loan terms. On RV’s and large enough boats that have something resembling a cabin or head compartment, a pooping device of some type, a sink, and some kind of cooking device (including a portable one) gets you into something qualified as a second home for tax purposes, so that interest becomes deductible.
The other line of thought at play is that relatively few buyers of these use them constantly . Most folks aren’t putting 20k/year on their RV (most probably aren’t putting more than 5k/year), and most boat owners are probably spending less than 10 weekends per year at the lake . The vast majority of the time these machines are parked. Not to say that boat or RV maintenance isn’t substantial (because it is, the purchase price is only the down payment on the ownership experience ), but if you take care of them, treat well when in use and can store them out of the elements, well- built ones can have seriously long lifespans. If you look back on my posts about the boat, in terms of condition most people would think it is not more than a few years old, not the 24 years old that it actually is.

Even if I had crazy stupid money I’d just get a little Class B adventure van. Probably the Winnebago Revel. Seems like it really makes the most of the small floor plan.

20 years is the length of time from when the kids move out into early retirement. But really when you think about it, you're buying a small house on wheels. It's less an auto loan than it is a mortgage.

Yup. Because most of them are built the way you’d build a lightweight house. And houses aren't intended to move around much.

Oh c ome on this can’t be a shock! Now my company gets to pay to clean my driveway... I’m sure my boss will be pleased. Getting a new van was the only “area of improvement” on my end of year PA:)

Shock, no. I’m ... Amazed. Was this thing made in the USSR?
At this point, I will be simultaneously happy and sad when the ProMaster finally gets retired.

When it comes to RVs, smaller is better to me. T

Knew a guy with one of these, similar spec, cost him a pretty penny, but oh so worth the money if it’s just you and one other person.

Yeah, pricing on them is insane at the moment, they cost as much as a Class A. I'm hoping that's just because it's a new design and essentially the first of it's kind from the major RV brands and once it's been out for a while and there's more competition the price drops. Also hoping for sharp depreciation and a large saturation on the used market lol

I think the only way you’ll get a cheap one is used, or a broken one in some way.
I don’t see the price coming down, that size will always be a little expensive because of the desirability for it.
Especially one that's 4 wheel drive and can take a trip through the woods to get to the good spots.

I’d love to hit the road and live on Bureau of Land Management property. I have seen folks on Youtube to it in these but think I want to get a 2-3 year old ArticFox and tow it with a Ram or Chevy 3500 SRW. The vans don’t hold enough water. Even the better 5th wheels you wont find more than 80-100 gallons as the weight eats up cargo capacity.
